Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most from VA Connecticut professionals.

That is true, and it is the single most common reason professionals give for not joining. Here is what it misses: the contract does not enforce itself. When management violates a provision, and it happens regularly, someone has to file the grievance, track the deadlines, sit across the table, and if necessary take it to arbitration. That someone is a dues-paying member’s representative.

Free riders receive the contract’s baseline protections, but they do not receive individual representation in investigations, they do not shape bargaining priorities, and they have no voice in how the union operates. Dues of $20 per pay period fund the stewards who represent you, the attorneys who arbitrate for you, and the national organization that lobbies Congress on your behalf.

The contract is the floor. The union is what keeps management from treating it as the ceiling.

Compare it to the alternative. A private employment attorney costs thousands for a single matter — union representation is included in your dues, backed by AFGE’s national attorneys. One avoided suspension or one protected raise pays for years of dues. Twenty dollars a pay period is the least expensive professional protection you will ever buy.

In grievances under the contract, yes — we represent every bargaining unit employee fairly, member or not. But members elect the officers, vote on the contract, shape the priorities, and receive AFGE Member Benefits including personal legal services. And the representation everyone relies on exists only because members fund it. Non-members aren’t getting union protection for free; they’re getting it because their colleagues pay.

Many strong professionals think so — until they’re in a meeting where the Agency has HR, counsel, and every document, and they have nobody. Federal employment runs on rules and short deadlines. Handling it alone doesn’t mean being brave; it usually means missing something. Even excellent professionals bring a representative — that’s not weakness, that’s how the system works.

No. The union never shares its membership list with the Agency, and with eDues, your dues come from your own bank — not payroll — so joining never appears in any Agency system. Nothing shows on your pay stub, and nothing crosses your supervisor’s desk.

Yes, from day one. Probation (two years for nurses and clinical staff; one year for social workers and psychologists) limits some appeal rights — which makes early union guidance MORE valuable, not less. If you’re new and something feels wrong, contact us before you respond to anything.

We believe it should be, and we’re inviting you in. See our open letter: Physicians & Pharmacists — You Have a Union Home. Whatever your title, start with one email to office@afge2138.org and we’ll tell you exactly where you stand.

If you’re being called into a meeting that could lead to discipline, invoke your Weingarten rights (see Know Your Rights for the exact words), then contact us immediately: union cell 203-901-2940, or office@afge2138.org. If you have a meeting or deadline within 48 hours, call — don’t just email.
